The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is a non-profit professional organization created with two key specific objectives. The first core purpose is to collect, disseminate, and exchange technical knowledge connected with the exploration, development, and production of oil and gas resources and related technologies for key stakeholder benefit. The second deliverable is to provide a range of opportunities for professionals and students alike to enhance their technical knowledge and performance with the purpose of enhancing their future career aspirations and growth potential.
KFUPM students participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities through the KFUPM SPE Student Chapter, a student body which functions under the auspices of the SPE International. The chapter's objectives are of a technical as well as a social nature as it provides the student an opportunity to share knowledge and experience with fellow members. Arranging excursions to industrial sites and operations, arid organizing seminars represent a few of the chapter's technical activities. Cultural events include students' get-together, picnics, sports activities and participation in the annual career day at KFUPM.
The SPE Student Chapter in King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM), Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, was found in June 1996. The chapter consists of more than 400 members, not only students but also young professionals, professionals, and professors.
Who We Are
The chapter aims to give university students and its members an enhanced understanding of the oil and gas industry by exposing them to new technology and developments in the field of the petroleum industry. We achieve this by conducting seminars by industry professionals, arranging trips to field locations and facilitating students’ participation in industry conferences.
A second aim of the SPE – KFUPM Student Chapter is to inculcate in students’ teamwork skills, communication skills, and a spirit of volunteerism to prepare the students for their future as industry professionals.
The main mission of the chapter is to expose students to the SPE, promote members’ creativity, emphasize the role of petroleum engineering in society, support the local SPE section and local companies, and cultivate technical and personal skills development among members.
The chapter's vision is to exceed expectations in serving out student community, society and become an outstanding student chapter and stay as one.

eMentorship is a distance mentoring program that enables participants to communicate at their convenience and across different time zones. The program also gives SPE members a chance to contribute to the E&P industry by sharing industry insights and practical career advice with young professionals, or by helping university students with academic and career direction. Young professionals also have the unique opportunity to serve as mentors to students. It’s easy to communicate via email, Skype, LinkedIn or other social media. The SPE-KFUPM Student Chapter attended the first meeting for the eMentorship Program held in Petroleum Engineering Department at KFUPM on Feb. 2016.
