A New Smart Resistivity Cup for Field Operations
Resistivity is a measure of the resistance of a substance to the flow of electrical current. Resistivity measurements are very important in the petroleum industry as it can be related to the rock saturation. Resistivity can be determined in the lab using resistivity meters or in the field using a resistivity logging tool.
The main objective of this research is to develop a new simple, light, easy to carry, and field operated device to measure the resistivity. In addition, the developed machine should have very low cost as compared with the existing resistivity meter.
The developed resistivity cub is very small, lightweight, and very cheap as compared with the current resistivity meters. The new device can be used for field operation as it easy to be carried, it is also programmed to measure the resistivity on well site. The results of the developed machine are comparable with the existing machines.
Automated Marsh Funnel for Oil and Gas Field Operations
The viscosity of the drilling fluid is a very important parameter in drilling operations. The viscosity affects many parameters such as required pump pressure, friction loss calculation, and hole cleaning optimization. In the field, drilling fluid viscosity is measured usually two times a day, while Marsh funnels viscosity and density are measured frequently every 10-15 minutes to give an indication of the changes in drilling fluid properties.
The objective of this patent is to develop an automated Marsh funnel that can be used in a real field operation to measure the funnel viscosity every 10 minutes with high accuracy. The idea of the new device was designed by using an electronic sensor that can control the gate or the one-way valve that allow only 950 cm3of the fluid to follow and automatically, the valve will be closed and the time is recorded.
The results obtained from the automated Marsh funnel are excellent and more accurate than those obtained by a human. This development is a one step further for the automated drilling operation. The Marsh funnel viscosity values can be used to determine different parameters such as; apparent viscosity, plastic viscosity, and yield point in a real-time operation
