
Dr. Abdulmalek Ahmed
Post-Doc Researcher, Department of Petroleum Engineering
Dr. Abdulmalek Ahmed joined KFUPM as a Post-doctoral researcher in the Petroleum Engineering Department in 2024. He previously worked as a research assistant in the same department from 2016 to 2023, during which he completed his master’s and Ph.D. He was a teaching assistant for some courses such as artificial intelligence in petroleum engineering, unconventional resources evaluation, drilling engineering, petroleum economics, drilling fluid, reservoir engineering, and well control. He worked at Baker Hughes Dhahran Research and Technology Center as an intern in 2015. Dr. Abdulmalek has more than 40 publications in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences. He is an active member of the SPE, ARMA, IADC, SPWLA, DGS, and SEG societies.

Dr. Ashraf Hashim Ahmed
Post-Doc Researcher, Department of Petroleum Engineering
Dr. Ashraf Ahmed is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Petroleum Engineering. He joined KFUPM in 2019 as a Ph.D. student, during which he played a vital role in the Drilling Engineering Research Team within the Department of Petroleum Engineering.
Dr. Ahmed was a lecturer in the Department of Oil and Gas Engineering at the University of Khartoum, Sudan, from 2015 to 2019. During this time, he contributed to numerous petroleum engineering courses.
Dr. Ahmed has demonstrated expertise in drilling engineering, drilling fluid optimization, production engineering, artificial lifting, production optimization, well completion, and workover, as well as the application of artificial intelligence in petroleum engineering. He boasts a diverse range of publications and substantial experience in machine-learning applications and experimental work with drilling fluids. His research interests include artificial intelligence applications in petroleum engineering, hydrogen sulfide removal, and drilling fluid optimization.

Dr. Mohamed Elmuzafar Ahmed
Post-Doc Researcher, Department of Petroleum Engineering
Mohamed Elmuzafar has a Ph.D. in petroleum engineering from KFUPM. He is experienced in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) related research, especially Surfactant polymer applications, starting from fluid evaluation and characterization such as phase behavior, compatibility, rheology, and interfacial tension up to determining the fluid recovery using core flooding as well as using reservoir simulation. For the pore-scale studies, he performed micro-CT imaging, micromodels with a microscope, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Also, he has good skills in performing simulation studies at the field scale with calibrated core scale simulations.

Dr. Ahmed Abdelaal
Post-Doc Researcher, Department of Petroleum Engineering
Dr. Ahmed Abdelaal is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Petroleum Engineering Department at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM). He previously worked as a research and teaching assistant in the Petroleum Engineering Department at KFUPM from 2018 to 2023, during which he completed his Ph.D. and Ms. He has been an integral member of the Drilling Research Group at KFUPM since 2020. Before joining KFUPM, he served as a faculty member in the Petroleum Engineering Department at Suez University in Egypt from 2015 to 2018. His Ph.D. research focused on developing innovative non-Portland cement systems aimed at advancing the circular economy and reducing cementing costs, while his master’s work addressed challenges in CO2 foam enhanced oil recovery (EOR). His scholarly contributions are reflected in several publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences Furthermore, he currently serves as a peer reviewer for several Q1 & Q2 journals. In addition, he shares his expertise as a part-time instructor and subject matter expert (SME) for renowned drilling institutes.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Dr. Abdelaal was involved in many activities at KFUPM, at regional and international levels. He served as the chairman of the IADC student chapter at KFUPM after co-founding it in 2021. He also served in different officer positions in the SPE-KFUPM which received the Presidential Award in 2022 for the first time and Excellence Award in 2023. In addition, he was the team leader for the KFUPM SPE Petrobowl team which won multiple titles for 5 years. In 2023, he won 1st place in the international SPE paper contest (Ph.D. division) with his Ph.D. work in ATCE, USA after winning 1st place in the MENA regional SPE paper contest in GOTECH, Dubai. He also graduated from the Entrepreneurial Emerging Leaders Acceleration (EELA) Program at KFUPM EI in 2022.

Dr. Jawad Hassan Al Drwish

Dr. Aldrwish’s research focuses on the innovative application of CO2 in subsurface formations, including CO2 storage, enhanced oil recovery (EOR), and well-stimulation. This research involves the design and optimization of CO2 foam rheology and stability under harsh reservoir conditions. This research aims to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of both conventional and unconventional subsurface energy systems. He has published several peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals: SPE Journals, Gas Science and Engineering, and Geoenergy of Science and Engineering. He serves as a reviewer for several journals, including ACS Omega, the Journal of Surfactants and Detergents, and the Journal of Petroleum Exploration and Production Technology.

Dr. Khaled Hussein Al-Azani
Post-Doc Researcher, Department of Petroleum Engineering
Dr. Al-Azani joined the Department of Petroleum Engineering as a postdoctoral researcher in September 2024. Before this, he served as a teaching assistant in the same department from 2016 to May 2024 while pursuing his master’s and Ph.D. degrees. He worked at Schlumberger Dhahran Center for Carbonate Research (SDCR), Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, as an intern in 2015. His research interest includes chemical enhanced oil recovery (cEOR), CO2-EOR, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), as well as leveraging machine learning applications in the oil and gas sector. His research expertise has equipped him with extensive experience in efficiently conducting core flooding experiments and utilizing high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) PVT systems, and operating a range of advanced analytical instruments. Dr. Al-Azani has authored and co-authored more than ten peer-reviewed papers published in high-impact journals, alongside different presentations at local and international conferences. Dr. Al-Azani is an active member of different professional societies and associations including the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Society of Well Log Analysists (SPWLA), American of Rock Mechanics Association (ARMA).

Dr. Ahmed Gowdia

Dr. Ahmed Gowida is a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the College of Petroleum and Geosciences (CPG), King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), Saudi Arabia. He earned his PhD in Petroleum Engineering from KFUPM in 2024, graduating with distinction and achieving a perfect GPA of 4.00. Before joining KFUPM, Dr. Gowida served as a faculty member in the Petroleum Engineering Department at Suez University in Egypt from 2016 to 2018, where he taught Drilling Engineering courses to undergraduate students. At KFUPM, he has taught a range of courses, including Introduction to Petroleum Engineering and Drilling Engineering at the undergraduate level, as well as Advanced Well Control and Advanced Drilling Fluids for graduate students. As an IADC-certified instructor, he integrates hands-on training into his teaching, utilizing advanced drilling simulators to provide industry-aligned education that bridges theoretical knowledge with practical skills critical to the energy sector.
Dr. Gowida’s research expertise lies in drilling engineering, with a focus on the design and optimization of advanced drilling and well construction technologies for systems such as underbalanced drilling (UBD), managed pressure drilling (MPD), and geothermal drilling. These innovations aim to advance unconventional subsurface energy systems. His research also delves into the intersection of machine learning (ML) and petroleum engineering, where he develops advanced models to automate workflows and drive the Industry 4.0 transformation in the energy field.
With a prolific research portfolio, Dr. Gowida has authored over 35 papers in high-impact scientific journals and delivered multiple conference presentations. His contributions to the field earned him first place in the 2022 SPE International Paper Contest for the PhD division, making him the first Middle Eastern scholar to achieve this prestigious distinction. Additionally, he holds a granted U.S. patent and has filed several patents in areas such as drilling fluids, artificial intelligence applications, and the design of advanced tools and equipment, underscoring his dedication to practical innovation in the energy industry. Beyond his academic and research roles, Dr. Gowida is deeply involved in the professional community. He serves as a board member on the Student Development Committee of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) International and as an ambassador for the SPE Energy4Me Program, fostering global energy education and outreach. Furthermore, he co-founded the IADC Student Chapter, the first of its kind in the Middle East region, as well as the Dhahran Geoscience Society (DGS) Student Chapter at KFUPM.
