Department of Petroleum Engineering

The Department delivers high quality programs in petroleum engineering with significant emphasis on innovation, integration, team work, high ethical standards and awareness of industry needs. The underlying quality of advanced research capabilities run throughout the diverse program of subject matters. All contribute towards the vision to be recognized worldwide as a center of excellence in education and research in the area of petroleum engineering.

Providing a four-year B.S. degree program, as well as M.S. and Ph.D. programs, the Department places particular emphasis on developing student research skills and fostering original research. In the graduate programs, a wide selection of courses is offered which are directed towards broadening the student’s technical background and, at the same time, deepening understanding in one or more areas of petroleum engineering.

The Department's teaching and research laboratories are fully equipped with state-of-the art equipment. The laboratories cover the areas of drilling fluids, oil-well cementing, rock and fluid properties, rock mechanics, quantitative analysis, thin sectioning and microscopy, formation evaluation, enhanced oil recovery and production engineering. Of particular significance to the multifunction specialized research laboratory, a drilling simulator and a drilling fluid flow loop have been bestowed to the department to enhance graduate research understanding and experience. In addition, the department has access to the general analytical laboratories of the Research Institute and is also linked to the University's main computer facilities as well as having its own personal computer laboratory. The department also maintains its own reference library.
