Since joining the Department of Geosciences in September 2006, Dr. Khalid has successfully led many interdisciplinary collaborative projects funded by KFUPM, KACST, and Saudi Aramco. These projects have allowed us to network with colleagues from prestigious international universities (Stanford, Tennessee, Leeds, Cardiff, Copenhagen, Milan) and from oil companies.

Awards & Honors

Dr. Khalid initiated and led the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Student Chapter at Geosciences Department. Dr. Khalid was able to secure an exclusive sponsor to significantly fund extracurricular activities. This generous fund has enabled our students to conduct a wide range of activities, including international field excursions to Turkey, Denmark, and Spain between 2011 and 2017. Also, as a faculty advisor of the KFUPM/AAPG student chapter, Dr. Khalid successfully supervised a team of BS and MS students that won the Imperial Barrel Award in the Middle East in 2010, 2012 and 2015. In 2010 and 2015, the KFUPM team won the third prize in the global contest in New Orleans and Denver, respectively.

Professor Michael A. Kaminski

Professor, Department of Geosciences

Prof. Mike Kaminski is a Distinguished Professor at the Department of Geosciences. He started his prolific academic career in 1979, graduating with a B.S. degree in Geology from Rutgers University, New Brunswick N.J., USA. He did his masters degree in Geology at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow Poland. In 1987, he was awarded his Ph.D. in the subject of Oceanography from the W.H.O.I./M.I.T. Joint Program in the USA. In 2007, he defended his “Habilitation” thesis at the Polish Academy of Science.

His research, projects, and teaching experience spans nearly 40 years and his recognition within the academic world brings significant recognition to KFUPM. Dr. Kaminski is fluent in English and Polish and is a foreign member of the Polish Academy of Arts & Sciences.  He has authored over 250 scientific publications and is the Editor-in-Chief of Micropaleontology, the oldest scientific journal in the subject area. He is a member of the editorial boards of several academic journals, including the Revue de MicropaleontologieGeological Quarterly, Geologica Carpathica, and the Grzybowski Foundation Special Publications. He has supervised over 60 graduate students.

Dr. Pantelis Soupios

Professor, CIPR, Department of Geosciences

Pantelis Soupios obtained his B.Sc. in Geology (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki-AUTh, Greece) and his MSc (AUTh) and Ph.D. (AUTh) in Applied Geophysics. He started his carrier at the Laboratory of Geophysics and Seismology of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. His expertise is on the application of several geophysical methods for environmental, hydrogeological, engineering applications, and geohazard studies. From 2002-2018, he was a faculty member at the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering at the Technological Educational Institute of Crete, Greece. He is currently a Professor of Near Surface Geophysics at the Department of Geosciences, KFUPM, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Dr. P. Soupios has established a strong international research network for collaboration and has authored and co-authored numerous chapters in books, articles published in scientific journals, and conference papers covering the broader area of applied geophysics. In addition, he has 6 years of industrial experience (mainly in engineering geophysics).

Dr. Peter Mora

Professor, Department of Geosciences

Peter Mora obtained a B.Sc. Hons in Geophysics from Adelaide University, Australia in 1979 with a thesis on Seismic Raytracing. He worked for 2 years as an Exploration Geophysicist for ESSO Australia and as a consultant in seismic ray tracing to Delhi Petroleum. He obtained an M.Sc. in 1984 and Ph.D. in Geophysics in 1987 from Stanford University on the topic of Full Elastic Wavefield Inversion. After working for 2 years for a pioneering massively parallel supercomputer company – Thinking Machines – he worked as a researcher and then Professor at Institut de Physique du Globe in Paris, France until 1994. He then joined The University of Queensland where he formed a research centre, initially QUAKES and later Earth Systems Science Computational Centre (ESSCC). In 1999, he established the APEC Cooperation for Earthquake Simulation, a collaborative research effort to simulate earthquake related phenomena. In 2002 he established a Major National Research Facility – The Australian Computational Earth Systems Simulator – aimed at simulating geophysical phenomena. From 2010-2018 he was Chief Scientist of a startup company aimed at predicting Foreign Currency Exchange Rates (FOREX). In January, 2019, he joined the CPG at KFUPM. His research spans Full Wavefield Inversion and computational geophysics ranging from simulation of earthquakes and fracture, to simulation of convection and fluid flow. He has over 200 publications. He has supervised over 20 Ph.D. students and 12 M.Sc. Students.

Dr. Mohamed Mahmoud

Professor, Department of Petroleum Engineering

Dr. Mahmoud is a Professor at The Department of Petroleum Engineering. He joined KFUPM as an Assistant Professor in September 2011. Prior that he was working as an application scientist at AkzoNobel, Chicago, USA. From 2004-08 he worked as a Petroleum Engineer at Belayim Petroleum Co. in Egypt. During the period from 2001-04, he was a drilling engineer at Magawish Petroleum Co., Egypt. His Research interests are varied and covering subjects including Well simulation, enhanced oil recovery and multiphase flow in vertical and horizontal wells.

He is a Ph.D. Graduate in Petroleum Engineering from the Texas A&M University 2011. Prior to that, Mohamed undertook his M.Sc. Degree in Petroleum Engineering in Egypt in 2005.

Dr. Salaheldin M. Elkatatny

Professor, Department of Petroleum Engineering

Dr. Elkatatny is a Professor at the Department of Petroleum Engineering, KFUPM. He joined KFUPM as an Assistant Professor in January 2015. He worked as a Senior Geo-mechanical Engineer at Advantek International Co. for four years. He was employed by Suco Oil Co. as a Drilling Engineer for one year. He received his Ph.D. in the Petroleum Engineering Department at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, USA. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from the Petroleum Engineering Department at Cairo University, Egypt. His research group focuses on drilling fluid optimization, filter cake removal, oil-well cementing, application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in petroleum engineering, and geomechanics. Dr. Elkatatny established state of the art labs such as Drilling Fluid Research Lab, Cementing Research Lab, Well Control Simulator and Two Advanced Drilling Simulators. Dr. Elkatatny published many journal papers (more than 160), conference papers (more than 170) and more than 37 U.S. patents. Dr. Elkatatny is working as Associate Editor for Journal of Energy Resources Technology and also for Arabian Journal for Geosciences. He is working as a technical editor for more than 20 journals.

Dr. Abdulazeez Abdulraheem

Professor, Department of Petroleum Engineering

Dr. Abdulazeez Abdulraheem is an Associate Professor focusing mainly on geomechanics and the applications of artificial intelligence in different areas of petroleum engineering.  Before joining the department, he has worked as a Research Engineer in the Research Institute at KFUPM for almost 18 years addressing field challenges in areas such as wellbore instability, sand production, and experimental rock mechanics.

Dr. Abeeb Awotunde

Professor, Department of Petroleum Engineering

Dr. Awotunde is a Professor in the Petroleum Engineering Department at KFUPM. Since joining KFUPM in 2010, he has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in Reservoir Simulation, Flow in Porous Media, Reservoir Description, and Well Test Analysis. He has also taught the graduate course in Mathematical Methods in Petroleum Engineering.

Dr. Ruud Weijermars

Professor, Program Leader – Geomechanics, CIPR, Department of Petroleum Engineering

Weijermars conducts original research in petroleum engineering to develop new tools and methods related to the quantification and visualization of (1) fluid flow in porous media, and (2) fracture propagation. He has developed new production forecasting tools and reserves estimation methods to support industry, with a heavy focus on unconventional resource development. Prior to joining KFUPM in 2021, Weijermars worked at Texas A&M University and the Bureau of Economic Geology, UT Texas at Austin — he was a postdoc at ETH Zurich in the late 1980s.
